Driver fleeing deputy arrested after crashing through fence and into tree

A driver plowed a stolen car through a metal fence and into a tree while trying to outrun a San Marcos sheriff ’s deputy early Monday, authoritie­s said.

The deputy tried to pull over the car after he spotted it traveling erraticall­y near Descanso Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road about 12:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. The car had only one working headlight.

The driver, later identified as a 32-year-old man, headed west on Descanso. A half-mile down the road, Descanso takes a sharp right at Alamitos Way.

The vehicle missed the turn, headed straight and crashed through a fence and into a tree, the department said.

The driver got out of the car and then refused to comply with the deputy’s orders, the department said.

The deputy released his dog and made the arrest.

The driver was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries, then later booked into jail on suspicion of several offenses, including vehicle theft, evading deputies and driving while under the inf luence of drugs.

Agents thwart human smuggling try along coast

IMPERIAL BEACH

Border Patrol agents arrested three men and a teenager susof swimming around a U.S.Mexico border wall and two other men accused of picking up the group in Imperial Beach on Sunday, officials said.

All were identified as Mexican nationals who were not authorized to be in the U.S.

Agents patrolling the coastline along Seacoast Drive and south of Imperial Beach Boulevard spotted the three men and the teen walking north on the beach about 6 a.m. They were wearing torn wetsuits but not carrying any other gear such as surfboards, Supervisor­y Border Patrol Agent Jeff Stephenson said.

When the agents approached the group, the men and teen ran. After a brief chase, the agents arrested the 17-year-old, Stephenson said.

The agents called for backup. When other agents arrived, they saw the three men get into a GMC Acadia.

As the driver tried to take off, the agents stopped the SUV. The driver, a front-seat passenger and the three men in wetsuits, who were in the rear seats and cargo area, were detained.

The five men and the teen were taken to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing.

Stephenson said the driver and passenger were expected to face charges of human smuggling.

The Border Patrol seized the SUV.

Townhouse fire displaces three adults in Oceanside OCEANSIDE

A fire that broke out in a threestory townhouse in Oceanside displaced three adults Sunday, officials said.

Several 911 callers reported the fire at the home on Via Blanca near Ivy Road about 6:10 p.m.

When firefighte­rs arrived, they called for additional resources and crews because of the potential threat to adjacent units, Oceanside Battalion Chief Scott Stein said.

“Due to a quick response and aggressive action,” however, crews were able to limit the spread of the fire, which was contained to the third floor, Stein said.

No one was injured.

The Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents with temporary accommodat­ions.

The cause of the fire was under investigat­ion. A damage estimate was not immediatel­y available.

Man suffers stab wounds during fight in Hillcrest

HILLCREST

A 46-year-old man was stabbed in Hillcrest on Sunday, San Diego police said.

The stabbing was reported just before 5 p.m. on Washington Street near Dove Street. The man told police he had been in a fight and was bleeding.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a stab wound to his lower abdomen.

Police said he was not cooperatin­g with investigat­ors.

Driver seriously hurt in crash with truck in Miramar area MIRAMAR

A 52-year-old driver suffered serious injuries Sunday when his car crashed into a box truck at an intersecti­on near Interstate 15 in the Miramar area, San Diego police said.

The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. on Pomerado Road. Police said a westbound 2008 Ford E-350 truck hit a 2017 Honda Accord when the car turned from a southbound I-15 off-ramp onto east Pomerado Road.

The truck then hit a signal light, police said. The truck driver was not hurt.

The Honda driver suffered two collapsed lungs, nine fractured ribs and a laceration to his right upper arm, police said. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Inmate death in Lancaster investigat­ed as homicide

California state prison officials have identified an inmate who had come from San Diego as a suspect in the death of a man incarcerat­ed in Lancaster.

According to a news release from the state Department of Correction­s and Rehabilita­tion, corpected rectional officers at the prison found inmate Myles S. Asuega, 33, unresponsi­ve in his cell shortly before 5:20 p.m. Friday.

Custody and medical staff attempted life-saving measures on Asuega, but he died. His death is being investigat­ed as a homicide. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner will conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of his death.

Investigat­ors have identified Asuega’s cellmate, Roberto Kaimimoku, as the suspect.

Kaimimoku, 33, was admitted from San Diego County on Oct. 7, 2008, to serve a 20-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder with gang and gun enhancemen­ts.

He also was sentenced in Kings County on Oct. 23, 2013, to serve two years for an assault committed in prison.

Kaimimoku has been moved to the prison’s Administra­tive Segregatio­n Unit pending the investigat­ion.

Asuega was admitted from San Bernardino County on Sept. 10, 2009, to serve 18 years for attempted second-degree murder, second-degree robbery and resisting or deterring an officer with threats or violence.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigat­ing the death.

The prison’s Investigat­ive Services Unit is assisting and the Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
