HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Garrett Brown
La Costa Canyon | Track
Heading to Arizona to compete in the Chandler Rotary Invitational, the Stanford-bound senior set a section record, becoming the first San Diegoarea athlete to clear 17 feet in the pole vault at 17-0¾.
Jennifer Moreno
Mt. Miguel | Basketball
The Matadors went 2-0, and the sophomore guard was a big reason. Moreno collected a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists against Eastlake, then tossed in 20 points in a 47-40 win over El Camino.
Luke Sevier
Mt. Carmel | Football
A junior, Sevier led the Sundevils to a 34-30 win over Del Norte with 10 receptions for 123 yards, picking off a pair of passes on defense and for good measure adding a key 65-yard punt return for a TD.
Gabby Schmidt
La Jolla Country Day | Swim/Dive
The junior won the 100yard breaststroke in 1:07.89 and then anchored the 400 freestyle relay team to a school record 3:53.08 as La Jolla Country Day downed Mira Mesa 81-64 in an Eastern League meet.
Justin Locke
Bonita Vista | Football
A key to the Barons collecting their first win of the season was the Locke-led defense shutting out Hilltop. Locke, a senior, was credited with 15 tackles, three for a loss, and a fumble recovery.
Juliana Laverdiere
Mount Miguel | Football/Soccer Making her only extrapoint try against Santa Fe Christian, the junior made it 3-for-3 for the season. She then had a hat trick plus one in the Matadors’ 8-4 girls soccer victory over Guajome Park.
