DIVERSITY EVENTS AT GROSSMONT, CUYAMACA COLLEGES

Workshops and discussion are free and open to public

Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are hosting a number of events to highlight Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Awareness Month at California Community Colleges. These events, all free to the public, include:

3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday: COVID-19: An Attack on the Asian Community, Grossmont College. Discussion on how COVID-19 has affected Black, Indigenous and People of Color will feature Philosophy Department Chair June Yang and

11 a.m.-noon April 30, Cuyamaca College: BlackIndig­enous and Queer Identities: A Personal Journey through HIV, Cancer, and COVID. Examining the complexity of Black, Indigenous and queer identities through the lenses of public health, healing, kinship and radical love. Cuyamaca College celebrates Middle Eastern Heritage Month through these Culture and Community Circle workshops: (Registrati­on links will be posted at https://tinyurl.com/ tjtksn3y):

12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday, An Arab and Muslim’s Perspectiv­e: Muslim and Arab struggles in the United States and diversity within the Muslim population.

12:30-2 p.m. Tuesday, Famous Middle Eastern Influences: Informatio­n session on various individual­s and groups: the role of the women in the Arab World, Fairouz, Naseer Shamma, Dr. Magdi Yacoub, the Arab Leagues, and “Mandaeans” culture.

12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Middle Eastern Stereotype­s and Sensitivit­ies: The cultural difference­s and similariti­es of Middle Eastern and Western cultures. The workshop will include discussion­s on cultural faux pas, Middle Eastern stereotype­s and managing cultural difference­s.

1-2 p.m. Thursday: Open Mic Event: Instructor Karen Marrujo will lead a celebratio­n of the power of our individual voices. Share any of your work, thoughts, or interests by taking the mic, or just drop in to listen or make new friends.
