A mother dog and her nine newborn puppies rescued in late March by officers from the San Diego Humane Society now have names.

The Humane Society held a naming contest earlier this month for the five female and four male Rhodesian ridgeback/ hound-mix puppies and their mom, and the group said a woman named Renee B. of Vista came up with the winning names.

Laguna was the winning name for mom; the puppies are: Torrey, Cowles, Woodson, Azalea, Fleming, Cedar Creek (CC for short), Sunset, Anza and Balboa.

“Since the dogs are Ridgeback mixes, she picked the names of famous ridges and hiking trails in San Diego,” according to an email from Kelli Schry of the Humane Society.

Members of the public suggested 478 sets of names for the family during the 11-day online contest that ended Sunday. The winner received a “swag bag” of San Diego Humane Society branded items.

The dogs were rescued the afternoon of March 25, when Humane Society officers responded to a report of a stray dog that had just delivered a litter on La Paz Drive in southeastern San Diego. Officers found a mother that had taken shelter under a van during the rain and had given birth to 10 puppies. One pup had died, but the others appeared healthy.

The mother and puppies were taken to San Diego Humane Society’s Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine in San Diego and later found refuge with a foster family through the Humane Society.

Once the puppies are at least 8 weeks old, they will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before being placed for adoption.
