Jake Arrieta’s stay with the Padres has come to an end.

The 35-year-old righthander was designated for assignment Tuesday, two days after allowing five runs in one-third of an inning and exiting with a right groin strain.

Arrieta previously spent two weeks on the injured list with a hamstring strain, sustained in his first start after the Padres picked him up following his release from the Cubs.

He allowed three runs in five innings in a start on Sept. 3 but allowed 15 earned runs in 121⁄3 innings over four starts with the Padres, good for a 10.95 ERA that was more than four runs worse than he was over 861⁄3 innings with the Cubs (6.88 ERA).

With Blake Snell and Chris Paddack both on the injured list, the Padres have not announced the rotation past Vince Velasquez and Yu Darvish starting today and Thursday against the Giants.

Arrieta’s departure allowed the Padres to activate right-hander Javy Guerra (elbow) from the 60-day injured list.

The 25-year-old Guerra, who is out of options, had struck out two over three scoreless innings on a rehab assignment — two in rookie ball and one at Double-A San Antonio.

Grievance hearing Monday

In the midst of difficult negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, Major League Baseball and its players’ association are scheduled to start a grievance hearing next Monday over the union’s claim the 2020 pandemic-affected season was too short.

The timing of the hearing was disclosed to The Associated Press on Tuesday by people familiar with the litigation who spoke on condition they not be identified.

Martin F. Scheinman, who took over as baseball’s impartial arbitrator after the clubs fired Mark L. Irvings, will hear the case over the coronavirus-impacted 2020 season. If the union prevails, MLB might be liable for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

The hearing takes place as the sides are negotiating to replace the labor contract that expires Dec. 1.

Bellinger to IL

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the injured list with a left rib fracture.

The team backdated the decision to Saturday. The Dodgers recalled outfielder

Luke Raley from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bellinger was banged up in a collision with Gavin Lux last week.

Cash sorry Rays kept card

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash apologized to Blue Jays management a day after Rays veteran Kevin Kiermaier scooped up a scouting data card that fell out of Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk’s wristband and refused to give it back.

Cash said he reached out to Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, pitching coach Pete Walker and General Manager Ross Atkins to make the apology before

Tuesday night’s 4-2 loss to Toronto.

Kiermaier was called out sliding into home during the sixth inning Monday night and saw a strip of paper lying next to him after the play. He casually picked it up and took it back to Tampa Bay’s dugout, where he discreetly handed it Paul Hoover, the club’s field coordinator.

“I never even looked at it, I’ll say that,” Kiermaier told Sportnet before Tuesday’s game. “But at the same time, I’m not going to drop it or hand it back.”
