Southwestern College receives equity honor

Southwestern College was recently named an Equity Champion of Higher Education for 2021 by the Campaign for College Opportunity, a nonprofit, bipartisan policy and educational research organization.

The recognition came for the college’s efforts in awarding associate degrees for transfer to Black and Latinx students. The campaign called the college’s success a “a tremendous achievement and the real work of equity.”

New Chula Vista club invites teen members CHULA VISTA

The Altrusa Club of Chula Vista has announced it is sponsoring a new Community ASTRA Club, a volunteer organization for young people, open to all high school students ages 14 to 19.

Members are now reading and recording stories for children in their neighborhoods. Future service projects include park and beach cleanups and a Christmas toy drive.

Imperial Beach hosting holiday event

The Imperial Beach Parks & Recreation Department is inviting the community to the 2021 Holiday Light Festival at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pier Plaza, held with the I.B. Business Association and the Port of San Diego. A holiday lighting ceremony will be at 5:15 p.m.

Playhouse opens ‘Cuban Christmas Tale’

“A People’s Cuban Christmas Tale,” a new play by Herbert Siguenza, opens at 8 p.m. Thursday at OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista. It runs through Dec. 19.
