Records: Kingsmen 7-1; Toreros 5-5

Series history: USD leads 4-0

Kingsmen update: Cal Lutheran is a Division III program, but with USD battling a long list of injuries, this will be a dangerous game for the Toreros. The Kingsmen are coming off an 87-66 loss to UC Santa Barbara, ranked No. 104 in the Kenpom metric. Cal Lutheran trailed by only three at halftime. The visitors push the ball up the floor and press, averaging 82.1 points. Freshman guard Mason Johnson (20.1) is the leading scorer. Tommy Griffitts, a 6-7 sophomore out of La Costa Canyon High, averages 10.6 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Toreros update: Guard Jase Townsend, who had been USD’s leading scorer, is out 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Third leading scorer Joey Calcaterra is out indefinitely with an ankle sprain. Combined, they average 21.6 points. With Townsend and Calcaterra out, freshman Wayne McKinney III (Coronado High) is expected to make the first start of his career. He’s coming off scoring a career-high 17 points in the Toreros’ 52-51 win against Cal Poly. Georgetown transfer TJ Berger is also expected to make his first start. The injuries don’t stop there. 6-10 post Terrell Brown-Soares (elbow infection) is expected to miss his third straight game. And forward Josh Parrish, usually the first player off the bench, is sidelined with a heel injury. The Toreros will get one player back, forward Yavuz Gultekin, who missed the past five games for a personal issue. USD has averaged just 49 points the past three games, which if it held for the season would rank last out of 350 Division I programs.
