AZTECS GET LUCKY AS LOCAL RB SIGNS

Sutton stays home after leading Dons to state championship

After discussing the 13 players San Diego State added to the football program on Wednesday’s national signing day, SDSU head coach Brady Hoke was asked if he anticipated signing anyone else during the three-day period.

Or were the Aztecs done? “I think I’m going to leave that as a surprise,” Hoke said with a smile and a laugh.

Then added. “Yeah, we hope to. There’s no doubt. We’re still working.”

It didn’t take long for the surprise to come.

On Thursday morning, SDSU got Lucky.

Cathedral Catholic running back Lucky Sutton signed with the Aztecs during a ceremony on campus.

“Official ... Proud to be an Aztec!” Sutton tweeted afterward.

Hoke had said SDSU still had a need at running back. He also hoped to sign more local players.

In Sutton, the Aztecs got both.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior rushed for 2,628 yards (11.3 yards per carry) and 35 touchdowns this season. He also caught 13 passes for 153 yards and five TDs while helping Cathedral to the Division I-AA state championship.

Sutton’s rushing total is the fifth-highest in San Diego Section history, according to the section record book.

Sutton’s personal highlight to the season was rushing for 442 yards and seven touchdowns (six rushing) in the Dons’ 71-62 Southern California Regional playoff win over Orange Lutheran.

The yardage set a singlegame large-school record. The TDs equaled the singlegame mark.

Sutton recently was honored as KUSI’s Silver Pigskin winner as the county’s top player and is the favorite to earn a similar honor when all-CIF selections are announced.

SDSU’s Class of 2022 now includes two running backs, with Sutton joining Lompoc High’s Sheldon Canley II.

Sutton is the third local player in the class, which includes one of the running back’s offensive linemen from Cathedral, Rambo Mageo. Eastlake linebacker Trey White is the other local signee.
