Toreros update: There were numerous fascinating numbers in USD’s 68-63 overtime win against Portland on Thursday. The Toreros came back from a 17-point, first-half deficit. After allowing Portland to hit 11 of its first 16 shots, USD dialed in the D. The Pilots were 12 of 48 the rest of the game. The Toreros won despite Joey Calcaterra going scoreless and being 0 for 9 from the field. Of the suited-up players, Calcaterra came in as USD’s second-leading scorer (9.5 points). But most telling was freshman guard Wayne McKinney III’s performance in the second half and overtime. In the first half, McKinney played nearly 9 minutes and was scoreless. In the second half and OT, he scored 14 points, was 3 for 3 on 3pointers, had seven rebounds and three steals. Leading scorer Marcellus Earlington (13.9) has been in double figures in all but four games. Yavuz Gultekin has scored in double figures three straight games. At 9-7, USD has three times as many wins as last year (3-11).
