As with rock ’n’ roll, opera has immersed itself in the digital realm. The New York Citybased On Site Opera was way ahead of the curve. It’s been producing virtual performances since 2012.
The newest for livestreaming is “Lesson Plan,” based on Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Der Schulmeister.” This interactive production will be performed live six times beginning today at 4:30 p.m. The final performance will be Jan. 29, also at 4:30 p.m.. Tickets are $30.
Starring in “Lesson Plan” will be mezzosoprano Stephanie Blythe, who opened San Diego Opera’s 2021-2022 season last October with a performance of songs and lyrics by the great Johnny Mercer. osopera.org

It’s being pitched as “A One-Night Stand From the Bourbon Room to Your Bedroom.” This is oh-so appropriate for an on-demand streaming production of “Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical Live in Concert.” If this were a film, like the 1999 flick on which it is based, it would be rated a very strong “R.” It’s sexual, potty-mouthed and irreverent. In other words, worth the $10 gamble.
Not to say there aren’t flaws in this show, which like the movie is an adaptation of the 18th century Pierre Choderlos de Laclos novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses.” For one thing, because the performance was captured inside the Bourbon Room supper club in Hollywood, patrons’ heads intrude on many of the shots in spite of the employment of multiple cameras. Then there’s the musical’s score, composed primarily of rock and pop songs from the ’90s — and not always the best. Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains” and Aimee Mann’s “You Could Make a Killing,” fine. The Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” and Counting Crows’ “Colorblind,” not so fine.
