Man arrested in death of his 88-year-old mother

Sheriff ’s deputies were called out early Thursday to a home near El Cajon, where they found an 88-year-old woman dead inside the home with her son, who they later arrested on suspicion of murder, sheriff ’s officials said.

A man called 911 around 1:30 a.m. Thursday asking for assistance at the home on Corto Lane just off Chase Avenue, according to a news release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The home is in an unincorpor­ated area between El Cajon and Rancho San Diego.

Deputies found Carolyn Jean Folkes slain inside the home with traumatic injuries to her upper body, according to the news release, which did not describe what type of injuries she sustained. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

The victim’s son, 55-year-old Chase Edward Folkes, was also inside the home, according to the news release. After complainin­g of some sort of pain, paramedics took him to a hospital under the watch of deputies.

Officials did not disclose a suspected motive in the slaying nor detail what they believe led up to the killing, but homicide detectives ended up arresting Chase Folkes on suspicion of murdering his mother, according to the news release.

Jail records showed he was booked into the San Diego Central Jail a little before 9 a.m. Thursday. He remained in custody Friday without bail.
