OUR ENDORSEMENTS FOR THE JUNE 7 BALLOT
The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board issued these voting recommendations in recent weeks for the June 7 ballot after interviewing dozens of candidates by email and several more by Zoom, hosting a series of in-person candidate forums for San Diego City Council and Chula Vista mayoral candidates, and conducting additional research, including reading news reports in The San Diego Union-Tribune and other outlets. The editorial board operates independently from the Union-Tribune’s newsroom, which was not involved in the board’s discussions or decisions.
In evaluating candidates, we considered their achievements, background, character, demeanor and experience as well as their records of community service and policy positions. Their political party was less relevant. We endorsed Democrats, Republicans and independents. In some races, we endorsed two candidates to make the Nov. 8 runoff election. In some races, we chose not to endorse. In the race for sheriff, we made an endorsement and then withdrew it. We urge you to read our full endorsements to better understand our thinking on that and every race. We offer these recommendations as a public service for our readers, not for any campaign, and appreciate you making our research part of yours.
Please remember that Tuesday is the last day to vote. Don’t think of it as Election Day. Think of it as an election deadline. Voting began nearly a month ago, and counting votes could take days or weeks more, all of which is a legal, legitimate part of the process. In San Diego County, ballots postmarked and mailed by Tuesday and received at the county Registrar of Voters within a week will count, and the registrar has until July 7 to certify election results in every race. We encourage you to drop your ballot off early at a voting center. Regardless of who you choose to represent you, thank you for voting.
