TWO DEMOCRATS LIKELY FOR NOV. RUNOFF IN DISTRICT 6

- BY DAVID GARRICK david.garick@sduniontribune.com

Two Democrats appear headed for a November runoff for the last San Diego City Council seat controlled by Republicans.

In early returns Tuesday, Democrats Kent Lee and Tommy Hough were significantly ahead of Republican Jane Glasson in voting for Council District 6, which includes Mira Mesa, University City and Kearny Mesa.

With 21 percent of the vote counted just after 11 p.m. Lee and Hough each had just over 38 percent of the vote, while Glasson had just over 23 percent. Lee was ahead of Hough by 5 votes.

District 6 Councilmember Chris Cate, the ninemember council’s last remaining Republican, could not run for re-election because of term limits.

Meanwhile, incumbents Vivian Moreno and Monica Montgomery Steppe also appear headed for November runoffs.

In the returns posted just after 11 p.m., Moreno and challenger Antonio Martinez — the only two candidates on the ballot for District 8 — were on their way to taking the two slots in the runoff. Moreno had nearly 63 percent of the vote, while Martinez had about 37 percent.

In San Diego races, even if one candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary, the top two vote-getters still move on to a November runoff.

District 8 includes Sherman Heights, Barrio Logan, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro. A Moreno-Martinez runoff would be a re-match of the 2018 runoff in District 8, where Moreno edged Martinez by 549 votes, 14,950 to 14,401.

Martinez works for U.S. Rep. Juan Vargas and serves on the San Ysidro school board.

In the returns posted just after 11 p.m., Montgomery Steppe had a large lead over challengers Gloria Evangelista and Tylisa Suseberry. Evangelista had a large lead over Suseberry for the second slot in the November runoff.

Montgomery Steppe had just over 70 percent, while Evangelista had nearly 23 percent and Suseberry had just over 7 percent.

District 4 covers much of southeastern San Diego, including Encanto, Skyline and Paradise Hills.
