Volunteers needed for July Fourth celebration

-

Organizers of this year’s “Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration” in Poway are looking for volunteers. Those who can work with crafts are especially needed.

The annual celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Old Poway Park. The event will feature patriotic entertainment, a magic show, model train displays, free children’s crafts and old-fashioned games. Treats and train rides will be available for a nominal fee.

Volunteers will serve alongside staff at Old Poway Park. Also needed are volunteers for cleanup, hosts for carnival games, office support, train-crossing managers and trainline support. For more information or to sign up, visit signup.com/go/nQJwtpG.

Volunteers can be 12 years old and older to work on their own. Those who are 5 and older can volunteer with a parent.

The VFW Post 7907 and the Poway Veterans Park Committee will host a ceremony to honor those who served the country at Veterans Park, adjacent to Old Poway Park, beginning at 11 a.m. The park’s Civil War-era cannon will be fired as the ceremony commences and ends at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Old Poway Park is at 14134 Midland Road. Free shuttles will run to and from the events at the following locations: Poway City Hall parking lot, 13325 Civic Center Drive; and Poway Adult School parking lot, 13626 Twin Peaks Road.

The city of Poway will host two firework shows to light up the night sky over Poway High School, 15500 Espola Road, and Poway Sportsplex, 12349 McIvers Court.

Gates at Poway High open at 6 p.m. for a special viewing party — with games, activities and a DJ spinning tunes. The cost is $5 per person; free for children 11 and younger. Fireworks begin at 9 p.m.

Lake Poway is open to the public on July 4 and will stay open as a viewing area for the fireworks at the high school. Parking is $10 for nonresidents. Residents and active military members (with ID) are admitted free.

For more information, visit poway.org and click on the events calendar. A parking map for fireworks viewing is at poway.org/fireworks-map.
