SAN DIEGO, CA — Eugene Batchelder Fletcher, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 20, 2022, surrounded by an enormous amount of love from his family. He leaves behind his loving wife and a large, adoring family of children and grandchildren.

Known by many as Gene, Captain Geno, Cuba and Papa Gene, he had an unselfish spirit, was generous, kindhearted and touched the lives of every person he met. He was loyal, humble and a true friend. Gene understood the value of working hard and the importance of playing even harder.

Gene found his peace in life in the air and on the water. He was an accomplished pilot, sailor and yachtsman. He spent many of his younger years flying his twin engine planes around the U.S. and Mexico with his first wife, Ann. Multiple times he raced the Trans-Pacific from Los Angeles to Hawaii with his seafaring buddies on the boat Bandido. He did many yacht races from California to Mexico. He loved to say “Want to sail to Mexico? Go to Point Loma and turn left.” Gene spent countless hours boating with his best of friends and family on Lake Mojave, Lake Mead and Lake Powell. Over time he transitioned to spending months at a time on his home away from home, on a sport fisher he named Caramba. Living his dream in Catalina and Mexico.

After the passing of Ann, Gene found love again and married Nancy, who shared his enthusiasm for travel. They spent about 14 years living between homes in Puerto Vallarta and San Diego, and almost 20 years of traveling the world from the Artic to the Antarctic, South Africa, Northern Europe, Indonesia, Australia, Mediterranean, Russia, Brazil and China. One trip always igniting excitement for the next.

Gene was a person who lived a life that inspired and motivated others.

Gene is gone but he will never be forgotten. When you think of Gene, celebrate the good memories you have of him. Carry on his kindness and willingness to help others.

When you are watching the sun set over the ocean, look for the green flash and raise your Rum and Diet in honor of Captain Geno. We know he will be raising his tumbler right back at all of us from Heaven. He will be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held in early September.
