SAN DIEGO — Capt. Fred Angres (USN, ret.) of San Diego CA, died July 19, 2022 following a brief illness. He was 89. Fred was born in Germany on April 28, 1933. He fled with his father, mother, and sister in August 1938 and settled safely in New York City. Although he lived in San Diego for over 30 years, at heart Fred still felt like a New Yorker. He was a proud graduate of The Bronx High School of Science and received a B.S. from Fordham University in Pharmacy, later earning a doctorate in Pharmacy from New York University.

After graduation, Fred entered the United States Public Health Service, where he served honorably as a pharmacist for twenty-four years. He was assigned to bases in Cincinnati, Ohio, Norfolk, Virginia and San Pedro, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California. Fred settled in San Diego, where he worked in pharmacies into his 70s.

Fred loved watching sports. He was a Brooklyn

Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Knickerbockers fan as a boy. In San Diego, Fred adopted the local teams and became a big Padres fan. He liked all the California basketball teams: the Lakers, the Clippers, and the Golden State Warriors.

He swam, walked regularly and was an avid reader. He went to the library every week and read the Wall Street Journal every day.

He loved baseball and basketball, but his greatest love was reserved for his parents, Herbert and Hanna, and his sister, Ellen, all of whom have sadly predeceased him. He is survived by his nieces, Victoria and Nancy, their husbands, Jonathan and Bill, and their children, Hanna, Simone, and Max.

Interment will be private in the same cemetery where his sister is interred in Barrington, Rhode Island.
