Edward Francis ‘Ed’ Martin III
SAN DIEGO — Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA, and he and his mother moved to Los Angeles in 1944. He grew up in Glendale, CA, and at age 18 left for the Navy. In his 21-year career he served as an enlisted man and later, a Naval Officer, retiring in 1974 as a Lieutenant Commander. During that time, he served in seven diesel powered and one nuclearpowered submarine, USS Thresher. He and Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Williams were married in San Francisco in 1963. He retired from the business world in 2002. The majority of his twenty-eight-year civilian employment career was in real estate finance in San Diego.
An active member of the community, he served on the board of the City of San Diego’s Data Processing Corp., was a Rotarian, a Toastmaster, and a number of civic minded and charitable organizations, and was a twenty-year volunteer at the USS Midway Museum. He was a member of the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, which provided the opportunity to enjoy participation in many fun and worthwhile events over the years. Ed loved San Diego and Pacific Beach, and was blessed with being married to a wonderful woman, and with living in a great neighborhood
In addition to helping wife Betsy raise their three children and a grandson, he found time to play golf, bocce ball, Over-the-Line, and sailing; and was blessed with having many friends with whom he shared fun and memories.
Preceded in death by daughter Karen, Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betsy, and son Bradley, daughter Linda, daughter-in-law Krista, granddaughters Katy and Kaeley, grandsons Christopher, Luke, and Ethan, and greatgrandson Logan.
Ed led a full and productive life, and will be cremated, with his ashes to be spread at sea.
