PLNU’S HOMER-HAPPY CHRISTIAN APPROACHES RECORD

- BY KIRK KENNEY kirk.kenney@sduniontribune.com

Jakob Christian homered 13 times last season for Point Loma Nazarene, so no one is surprised when the sophomore first baseman hits a ball over the fence.

The 6-foot-4 Christian is in the midst of an exciting home run streak this season, even for him.

Christian has homered in seven straight games, two shy of the NCAA Division II record set in 2011 by Chase Larsson for Oklahoma’s Cameron University. Nine straight games also is the Division I mark, set two years ago by Nevada’s Tyler Bosetti.

The major league record is eight straight games, shared by the Mariners’ Ken Griffey Jr. (1993), the Yankees’ Don Mattingly (1987) and the Pirates’ Dale Long (1956).

“It’s ironic; I’ve been trying not to think about it so much,” Christian said. “For the most part, I’m just trying to think small and hit the ball hard somewhere. When you start to think about it too much, you start to get overwhelmed and things don’t tend to go your way.

“I’ve really just been honing in on doing my work, keeping my head down and doing my job when I’m in the batter’s box.”

Christian’s streak began two weeks ago with a solo homer to left field against Northwest Nazarene at PLNU’s picturesque Carroll B. Land Stadium.

He had homers in each contest — two in the second game — last week during PLNU’s three-game sweep at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Christian extended the streak with homers in three games this weekend against No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino, which took two of three games from No. 4 PLNU (8-3).

“I didn’t really notice until the sixth game (on Friday),” said Christian, a St. Augustine High School grad. “I saw it get posted and I’m like, ‘Dang, that’s pretty cool.’ ”

Christian hit his Division II-leading ninth homer of the season in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game at San Bernardino.
