Dinosaur Jr.:

-

The opening verse of Dinosaur Jr.’s 1994 song “I Feel the Pain” may take on a new pathos if the pioneering alt-rock band performs it at the Belly Up here on Monday or Tuesday. The song was written by J Macis, Dinosaur Jr.’s guitarist and lead vocalist, in the aftermath of the death of his father. It begins: “I feel the pain of everyone, then I feel nothing.” Those words could mirror the sentiments of many in the audience, if not Macis himself, coming so soon after the Feb. 17 death of San Diego-bred alt-rock legend Otis Barthoulameu. Fondly known far and wide simply as O, he worked as a tour manager for Dinosaur Jr. and other bands. O was equally well known as a skateboarder, a photographer, a visual artist and the guitarist in such highly regarded San Diego bands as Olivelawn, fluf, The Makeup Sex and, more recently, Harshmellow. A champion of young indie-rock bands — including the early blink-182 — he was a mainstay at local music venues, cheering on young and established performers alike. His loss may be acknowledged in song here by Dinosaur Jr.

8 p.m. Monday (with Emily Rose & The Rounders) and Tuesday (with Pink Mountaintops). Belly Up, 143 S. Cedros Ave., Solana Beach. $38-$66 (must be 21 or older to attend). (858) 481-8140, bellyup.com

Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, featuring Daisy Castro: Fleet-fingered Gonzalo Bergara cut his teeth as a teenager playing in blues bands in his native Argentina. He moved to the U.S. in 2000, then only 19, and began a three-year stint in fellow guitarist John Jorgenson’s quintet. As the leader of his own group, Bergara pays homage to the pulsating gypsy-jazz style popularized by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in the 1930s. In violinist Daisy Castro, 25, Bergara has a skilled instrumental foil. Expect musical sparks to fly when they hit the stage here. 8 p.m. March 3. Dizzy’s, Arias Hall (behind the Musicians Association building), 1717 Morena Blvd., Bay Park. $25. (858) 270-7467, dizzysjazz.com
