NO. 2 SEED TSITSIPAS OUSTED

Stefanos Tsitsipas was beaten 7-6 (0), 4-6, 7-6 (5) by Aussie Jordan Thompson in second-round play at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday in Indian Wells.

The second-seeded Tsitsipas had his shoulder taped and the injury appeared to affect his backhand.

Jordan took advantage and attacked the Greek’s backhand while charging in on short balls to earn his second career win over a top-10 player.

He polished off Tsitsipas, the Australian Open runnerup, in two hours, 37 minutes.

No. 3 seed Casper Ruud cruised past Diego Schwartzma­n 6-2, 6-3. Ruud raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set and won the only break point on his serve with a forehand that clipped the line.

No. 10 seed Cameron Norrie advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over qualifier Wu Tung-Lin of Taiwan.

A handful of seeded men fell. Jason Kubler moved on when No. 21 Grigor Dimitrov retired trailing 2-6, 7-6 (5), 3-0. No. 22 Roberto Bautista Agut lost to Emil Ruusuvuori, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Ilya Ivashka advanced when No. 28 Botic Van de Zandschulp had to retire trailing 7-5, 3-2. No. 29 Yoshihito Nishioka fell to qualifier Cristian Garin, 6-4, 6-0.

In women’s play, No. 2

Aryna Sabalenka defeated

Evgeniya Rodina, 6-2, 6-0.

No. 9 Belinda Bencic lost to Jil Teichmann, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 29 Donna Vekic was beaten by Lesia Tsurenko, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 11 Veronika Kudermetov­a defeated Anna Blinkova, 6-3, 6-4. Sixteenth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova beat Dayana Yastremska, 6-1, 6-2. No. 24

Jelena Ostapenko got by

Aliaksandr­a Sasnovich, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

16 and 15 points, respective­ly, and third-seeded Cal State San Marcos (24-5) opened the NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament with an 86-74 win over fourth-seeded Central Washington (21-9) at the Torodome at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Cougars advance to today’s second-round game, which will start at 5 p.m.

added 19 as Cal State San Marcos’ sixth-seeded men’s team opened the Division II NCAA Tournament with a 72-62 win over third-seeded Azusa Pacific at Point Loma Nazarene’s Golden Gymnasium. The Cougars shot 46.1 percent from the field and hit 6 of their 14 3-point attempts in the victory. They advance to today’s second round.

• No. 1 seeded PLNU men’s basketball advanced to today’s West Regional semifinals with a 78-64 win over No. 8 Northwest Nazarene. Kaden Anderson

scored a game-high 21 points and added 15 rebounds. Jake Lifgren scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, while Brian Goracke (17 points) and Tobin Karlberg (14 points) also scored in double figures.

• The Palomar College women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Associatio­n state tournament with an 88-49 win over College of the Sequoias in the quarterfin­al

round at West HillsLemoo­re College. The Comets, ranked No. 1 in the state with a 31-0 record, will play Butte (27-3) in the semifinals. Sophomore guard Deajanae Harvey, a Granite Hills High grad, led the Comets with 39 points.

• The San Diego State softball team (15-7) scored a 4-3 eight-inning win over Long Beach State late Thursday night but Friday’s two games in Fullerton were rained out.

• UC San Diego baseball (5-6) defeated Northern Colorado (2-11) 17-10 to open the three-game series at Triton Ballpark. Emiliano Gonzalez set a UCSD Division I record with five hits, and tied the school record with five runs scored.

• The SDSU baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision of San Jose State at home in the first game of a doublehead­er. The second game was supeneded due to rain and will resume today.

Hockey

The San Diego Gulls won their third game in a row with a 2-0 AHL victory over Henderson at Pechanga Arena. Gage Alexander recorded the shutout with 26 saves.

Boxing

Oleksandr Usyk took to social media to accept Tyson Fury’s terms for a fight to become undisputed world heavyweigh­t champion. Time appeared to be running out to arrange a deal between the titleholde­rs for a proposed April 29 fight in London, with Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, saying their latest offer — a 60-40 split to the winner — was rejected by Fury and his camp. That prompted Fury, the WBC champion, to publish a video on Instagram, saying he would fight only if there was a 70-30 split of earnings from the bout in his favor.

Deaths

Otis Taylor, the longtime Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver who along with quarterbac­k Len Dawson formed one of the NFL’s dynamic duos, died Thursday after more than a decade of health problems. He was 80. Taylor’s family, who had been caring for him as he dealt with Parkinson’s disease and dementia, confirmed that he had passed away a mere seven months after Dawson, his close friend and teammate.

• Pat McCormick, who became the first diver to sweep the 3-meter and 10meter events at consecutiv­e Olympics, died. She was 92. She died Tuesday of natural causes at an assisted living facility in the Orange County city of Santa Ana, her son, Tim, said.

Soccer

Neymar underwent season-ending surgery on his damaged right ankle on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain said. The 31-year-old Brazil forward “was successful­ly operated on late this morning at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha,” the Qatari-backed club said in a statement. Neymar is expected to be sidelined for up to four months.

Fencing

The Internatio­nal Fencing Federation voted to allow athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus to resume competing in internatio­nal events after an exclusion lasting more than a year, four national federation­s said. The decision appears to allow Russians and Belarusian­s to compete for qualifying spots for next year’s Paris Olympics.
