Cubs 5, Padres 2

- JEFF SANDERS

Batter’s box: Nelson Cruz joined Austin Nola and Matt Carpenter as the only projected regulars who made Sunday’s trip to Mesa. After going 0-for-3 on Saturday in his first game back from the WBC, Cruz went 1-for-4 against the Cubs. He got a single in his only WBC at-bat and is 6-for-26 this spring (.671 OPS). … Carpenter was 0-for-4 and is 5-for-29 (.555 OPS) so far this spring. … CF Adam Engel went 0-for-1 with two walks and a stolen base as the leadoff hitter. … RF Brandon Dixon went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the first. … 2B Rougned Odor went 2-for-3 and 3B Tim Lopes was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Balls and strikes: Making his fifth appearance of the spring, Julio Teheran rebounded with 32⁄3 solid innings. He struck out three, walked, one, hit a batter and allowed his only run on Yan Gomes’ fourth-inning homer. He also allowed a one-out triple in the third inning to Nico Hoerner in the third inning but stranded him at third. Teheran had allowed eight runs over his previous seven innings. … LHP Josh Hader pitched a scoreless fifth, while RHP Nabil Crismatt, in his first appearance since returning from the WBC, allowed a run on three hits and a walk in two innings. He struck out one . ... RHP Aaron Brooks allowed a three-run, walk-off homer to Nelson Velazquez without recording an out in the ninth inning.

Extra bases: José Azocar was not charged with an error, but he struggled to collect Hoerner’s one-out triple into the left-field corner in the third inning (Odor’s diving stop to his right on a two-out ball hit by Ian Happ stranded the runner). Azocar started five games in left field in the majors last year, 18 in right and 31 in center. Including minor league and winter ball experience, Azocar has only 117 innings in left field in his career. This was his second start in left field this spring. … Teheran was chased from the game when a hard-hit ball shot under Carpenter’s glove at first base with two outs in the fourth.

On deck: The Padres are off today. Right-hander Michael Wacha will start Tuesday night against the Rockies (6:40 p.m.) in Peoria. Right-hander Luis Garcia is among the relievers scheduled to pitch in what will be his first appearance since returning from the WBC.
