Batters’ box: Four of the Padres’ first five batters reached base to start the game, with RF Fernando Tatis Jr. singling, 1B Jake Cronenwort­h doubling and SS Xander Bogaerts doubling with one out to open the scoring. 3B Manny Machado stuck out in that first inning, but he added a two-run single during the Padres’ four-run second. Bogaerts doubled twice, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. DH Matt Carpenter went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Cronenwort­h went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Tatis was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. … C Luis Campusano was 1-for-3 with a double off the base of the wall.

Balls and strikes: RHP Anderson Espinoza, once the organizati­on’s top prospect, struck out five over four shutout innings in his second appearance this spring. He allowed one walk and one hit, to former USD star Kris Bryant in the fourth inning. … LHP Tim Hill allowed a hit and struck out a batter in a scoreless sixth. … LHP Ray Kerr struck out two but allowed two runs on three hits and a walk. RHP Kevin Kopps, the 2021 Golden Spikes winner, struck out former Double-A San Antonio teammate Connor Kaiser to strand two of Kerr’s runners.

Extra bases: DH Nelson Cruz did not appear in the big-league game, but he spent the afternoon collecting at-bats on the back fields. Cruz is 6-for-26 (.670 OPS) with one homer in big-league games. … RHP Michael Wacha threw four pseudo-innings against a team of Royals minor leaguers.

On deck: RHP Seth Lugo gets the start in today’s 6:05 p.m. start in Goodyear against the Cincinnati Reds. LHP Josh Hader is also scheduled to pitch.
