SAN DIEGO — Margaret Jean Thompson passed away peacefully March 13, 2023, with her husband by her side at her home in Paradise Hills. Jean, as she preferred to be called, was born on June 30, 1930, in Baltimore, MD to Margaret and Arnold Grimes. Jean was oldest of five, with one sister and three brothers.

In 1951, Jean married Osco Shearer and they had four children, two girls and two boys. Osco’s Navy career brought them to San Diego, and in 1980 they divorced.

In 1982, Jean found and married her forever love, Herbert (Skip) Thompson, and they were inseparable for 40 years. A friend once said, after noting their closeness, “Skip is Jean’s left hand and Jean is his right hand”.

Jean loved working; for 27 years she worked mostly for Navy Supply Center, retired as Deputy Director GS-12 of code 800 personal property, then 10 years of merchandising for Sea World.

Jean volunteered as an Admin. receptionist under CEO retired Adm. Mac McLaughlin, USS Midway. Her husband volunteers as a Docent. She was a stickler for perfection and keeping everyone on time, etc. Adm. Mac dubbed her “Mean Jean”; Mac even had a name tag made for her - “MEAN JEAN”.

In 2018 Jean was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Dementia. True to her form with a few months remaining, she said to her husband “I need to get a job”.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by everyone she has touched and known.
