A 38-year-old East Village resident was in his kitchen last week, looking through his mail when a stranger showed up, a prosecutor said Monday.

The stranger walked into the apartment — the front door had been propped open with a fan — and stabbed Andrew Phillip Holland 40 to 50 times “in an unprovoked, callous rage,” Deputy District Attorney Miriam Hurtado told a judge in San Diego Superior Court.

Holland was stabbed in his head and torso, and died at the scene.

The details about the attack were revealed during an arraignment for the accused assailant, Maxwell Logan, 25, who pleaded not guilty to felony charges including murder and an allegation he used a knife in Holland’s death.

Logan also faces a count of false imprisonment. Prosecutors say he locked his girlfriend in a bedroom in their apartment the same night as the stabbing, and threatened her and her pets.

If convicted, Logan could face 38 years to life in prison. He was ordered to remain held in county jail on a no-bail status.

Defense attorney Robert Hartmann, who represents Logan, said the charges are “merely allegations.”

“We will wait for the truth to come out,” Hartmann said after

the hearing.

The attack happened Wednesday at the Market Street Village Apartments on 14th Street near G Street. According to police and prosecutors, Holland’s roommate found him mortally wounded and called 911 about 10:50 p.m.

A blood trail led to Logan’s apartment on another floor in the building, the prosecutor said.

As police investigated that night, Logan’s girlfriend threw notes to officers on the street below, asking for help from the bedroom where she was locked inside. The woman was not injured.

When officers checked on her, they found Logan with blood on him and minor injuries “consistent with being in some type of confrontation,”

San Diego police Lt. Steve Shebloski said.

Asked to comment on a possible motive, Hurtado said after the arraignment that she could not comment on Logan’s mental state and said the investigation was ongoing.

About two hours before the fatal attack, a woman called police and reported a prowler in the apartment building.

A second woman reported that a man had kicked her in her buttocks as she was walking her dog. In both instances, the suspect matched Logan’s description, Hurtado said.

The case remains under investigation.
