COLLINS, FORMER ’HAWKS AND RAVENS RB, DIES
Former NFL running back Alex Collins, who played five seasons for the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens, was killed in a motorcycle crash in South Florida, authorities said. He was 28.
Collins was driving a motorcycle that crashed into a sportutility vehicle Sunday night in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., the Broward County Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release.
The SUV was mak- ing a left turn when Collins’ motorcycle hit its rear passenger side. The impact caused Collins to go through a window of the SUV and come to rest inside the vehicle, the sheriff ’s office said. Collins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver, whose name was withheld, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, authorities said.
The Seahawks released a statement from Collins’ family Monday night
“Alex was cherished by his family and friends as well as supporters from all around the world. All who truly know him can attest to his drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality,” the statement said. “We kindly request your thoughts and prayers for our family during this difficult time.”
Collins played in college at Arkansas, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards in all three of his seasons.
Death
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov died less than 2 years since being diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was 21. Agent Dan Milstein confirmed to The Associated Press that Amirov died Monday in Munich, Germany. The team said in February 2022 that Amirov had a brain tumor and would go to Germany for treatment, in the hopes of being able to resume his hockey career at some point.
The Maple Leafs said their organization was devastated by the news of Amirov’s death.

David Krejci has decided to retire, an expected development that leaves the Boston Bruins without their top two centers after setting records for the most wins and points in a season.
• The International Ice Hockey Federation ruled in favor of the Philadelphia Flyers by agreeing that Russian goaltender Ivan Fedotov had a valid NHL contract for the upcoming season when he signed with CSKA Moscow in the KHL.

• Cologne needed extra time to beat second-tier side Osnabruck 3-1 in the firstround of the German Cup, when Darmstadt became the fourth Bundesliga club to be knocked out.
• Chelsea took its spending on players to a staggering $1 billion in 15 months under its American owners by signing Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton on Monday for a reported 115 million pounds ($146 million). It is a record fee for a transfer in Britain, surpassing the 106.7 million pounds (then $131.4 million) that Chelsea paid for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the January window.
Tennis
The budding rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic is set to be renewed in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals next month. Alcaraz and Djokovic were included in the teams announced by Spain and Serbia, respectively, for the competition that will be played Sept. 12-17 in Valencia, Spain. Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in July. The Spaniard is No. 1 in the world, with Djokovic sitting at No. 2.
