2 arrested in organized retail theft spree in county

-

A man and woman were arrested Thursday in connection with a series of retail thefts from multiple businesses across San Diego County that resulted in over $20,000 worth of items being stolen, sheriff ’s officials said.

The pair, both 33, were arrested on multiple burglary charges after they were located by deputies at a motel on Via de San Ysidro, just south of Interstate 5, around 7:30 a.m., said Sgt. Heather Bruton in a news release.

Investigators said that before the arrest, a fire had broken out at the motel. The blaze was unrelated to the suspects.

The two thieves worked in tandem over the last three months to steal from more than 20 retail stores — hitting some of the same businesses multiple times, Bruton said. The total value of the items stolen was around $24,000.

Some of the stolen items were recovered.
