REMEMBERING 9/11 WITH EVENTS ACROSS COUNTY
This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Nearly 3,000 people were killed that day at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and in Somerset County, Pa.
Here are events happening in
San Diego County to honor the anniversary:
OCEANSIDE Remembrance walk:
The 2,200 Steps — 9/11 Remembrance Walk will be held at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside. The event starts with a ceremony at the park’s flagpole before a 2,200-step walk, symbolizing the steps that first responders took up the 110 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center. POWAY Movie screening and discussion:
Watch a 30-minute film made by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum at the AMC Dine-In Poway 10 theater today. After the film screening, there will be a guided conversation with local first responders, community leaders and veterans. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Buy tickets at bit.ly/3LboBQ0. RINCON RESERVATION Harrah’s memorial stair climb:
Harrah’s Resort Southern California and the Rincon Fire Department will hold a memorial stair climb at 9 a.m. Sunday. Participants will ascend 110 flights of stairs in the South Tower of the resort. Members of the Rincon Fire Department, other local first responders and community members can take part. (777 S. Resort Drive, Valley Center)
SAN DIEGO
Memorial stair climb: Community members can join firefighters, police officers and military personnel to climb 110 flights of stairs at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which represent the number of floors in the World Trade Center. Participants are invited to wear the name and a photo of an emergency responder who died on 9/11, as well as pledge to raise $110 for FirefighterAid, a nonprofit that supports firefighters and their families in crisis and raises awareness about firefighter safety. Memorial service: The USS Midway Museum will host a memorial service on the ship’s flight deck at 2:30 p.m. Monday. The New York City Fire Department Retirees of San Diego, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, National City Fire Department, San Diego Firefighters Emerald Society and the Wounded Warrior Project will be in attendance. A reception at the Firehouse Museum will follow at 5 p.m. (Navy Pier, 910 N. Harbor Drive)
Remembrance run: The 9/11 Heroes Run aims to bring the community together to honor those who died on 9/11 and in the wars since. Flag ceremony: The San Diego State University ROTC will host a remembrance ceremony on campus at the Campanile Walkway Flagpole in front of Hepner Hall. The event starts at 8:40 a.m. Monday.
