STANFORD SHOOTS DOWN ARIZONA

- No. 9 Stanford vs. Morgan State:

Freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle scored 25 points, Spencer Jones added 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting and Stanford surprised No. 4 Arizona 100-82 in a Pac-12 matchup Sunday.

Andrej Stojakovic scored 16 points and center Maxime Raynaud had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinal (6-6, 1-1), who made a school-record 16 3-pointers in the home victory.

Caleb Love led Arizona (10-3, 1-1) with 23 points and center Oumar Ballo added 12 points and seven rebounds.

The victory was Stanford’s first over a ranked opponent since beating Arizona last season and its eighth over a ranked team since 2020.

“I think this will absolutely be the peak moment of this season for 2023,” Stanford coach Jerod Haase said. “For 2024, we’re going to start from scratch and see new peaks and new highs. Usually I tell them to enjoy the win until midnight. This time I told them they could enjoy this one for the rest of the year.”

Stanford raced to an early lead, scoring the first seven points. After Ballo made a layup to bring the Wildcats within a point at the 6:56 mark of the first half, Stanford went on a 21-7 run for a 43-28 lead with under three minutes left in the first half.

The Cardinal got a big boost from both of its freshman guards off the bench in the first half. Carlyle scored 13 of his 25 points in the first half while making all four of his 3-point shots. Stojakovic scored nine points and grabbed two rebounds.

Haase praised his young players and said they were a

big part of the win.

“(Kanaan) was fearless out there,” Haase said. “With Kanaan and Andre, their eyes are full of wonder and excitement. I think we can all feed off that.”

Arizona struggled to find a its rhythm in the first half, shooting 41.2% from the field and 25% from long distance.

Stanford led 44-35 at halftime.

Stanford’s hot shooting continued in the second half. Jones scored 11 of the Cardinal’s first 16 points after halftime.

No. 12 Oklahoma 72, Monmouth 56: Jalon Moore scored 21 points and Oklahoma (12-1) concluded its nonconfere­nce schedule with a win over visiting Monmouth (7-6).

No. 24 Mississipp­i 95, Bryant 78: Allen Flanigan scored 20 points, Matthew Murrell had 18 and the duo combined for 31 second-half points to help host Mississipp­i (13-0) beat Bryant (8-7).

No. 3 NC State 72, Virgin

ia 61: Mimi Collins scored 25 points and Saniya Rivers had 10 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists as North Carolina State (13-0) pulled away after halftime from host Virginia (8-4) in an ACC opener.

Syracuse 86, No. 13 Notre Dame 81: Dyaisha Fair scored 27 points and hit three huge 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, leading Syracuse (11-1) past visiting Notre Dame (9-2) in a thrilling ACC opener on Sunday.

No. 14 Virginia Tech 91, Pittsburgh 41: Georgia Amoore scored 20 points, Olivia Summiel had a double-double and Virginia Tech (10-2) coasted to a win over visiting Pitt (6-8) in an Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

No. 15 UConn 95, No. 18 Marquette 64:

Paige Bueckers scored 25 points, Aaliyah Edwards had 19 points and 12 rebounds and host UConn (10-3, 2-0 Big East) ended Marquette’s best start ever (12-1, 1-1) with a dominating win.

No. 16 Indiana 77, Illinois 71: Mackenzie Holmes

scored 30 points, Yarden Garzon was clutch in the closing seconds and Indiana (11-1, 2-0 Big Ten) ran its winning streak to 10 with a win over visiting Illinois (6-6, 0-2).

No. 19 Louisville 77, Miami 72: Jayda Curry scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, Nyla Harris had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Louisville (12-2) won at Miami (10-2) in a sloppy and disjointed Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

No. 22 Florida State 73, Wake Forest 61:

Ta’Niya Latson scored 30 points, half of them in the fourth quarter, and Florida State (10-3, 2-0 ACC) used a late surge to break away from visiting Wake Forest (4-9, 0-1).

No. 24 North Carolina 82, Clemson 76:

Lexi Donarski made six 3-pointers and scored 23, Alyssa Ustby finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds and host North Carolina (9-4) began Atlantic Coast Conference play with a victory over Clemson (8-6).
