‘FROZEN’ AND ‘ENCANTO’ HIT THE ICE

TWO ANIMATED DISNEY HITS COME TOGETHER FOR A NEW FAMILY SKATING SHOW

- BY RICHARD GUZMAN

The stars of Disney’s animated hits “Frozen” and “Encanto” are jumping from the screen and sliding onto an ice rink when “Disney on Ice” comes to in San Diego next week. “Right out the gate it has the two heavy hitters,” said Adam Loosley, creative director for Disney on Ice. “And what was really appealing for me about putting this show together was the contrast between ‘Frozen’ and ‘Encanto’ right down to the colors you’re looking at. ‘Frozen‘ is an icy blue, and ‘Encanto’ is South American with vibrant colors and tropical,” he added.

The two-hour show has a cast of 50 skaters performing as characters like Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” as well as Mirabel and the Madrigal family from “Encanto,” plus Disney stars like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald and Goofy wowing people with their ice-skating skills and aerial acrobatics, all set to songs from the films.

The show begins with the 2013 animated movie “Frozen” as Olaf, the snowman who likes warm hugs and all things summer, narrates a story about Anna’s adventure to find her sister Elsa in a race to bring back summer after her icy powers have caused an eternal winter.

From there it’s off to Colombia and an enchanted town called Encanto. As in the animated 2021 film, the ice show will feature the Madrigal family, whose magical powers are mysteriously draining away as the family experiences internal friction.

While Disney has featured “Frozen” in its ice show before, this tour marks the first time “Encanto” has been brought onto the ice, Loosely said. And he promises fans of the movie an authentic interpretation filled with dance music, including cumbias.

“We really wanted to pay homage to how important this movie is to Colombia as a culture. So we really did our homework to bring it to life in a way that’s really authentic,” Loosey said.

And through it all the audience will be led by Disney’s biggest stars.

“Mickey and Minnie will take us right from the top of the show and through both storylines,” Loosely said.
