JOSHUA KOSMAN’S CLASSICAL MUSIC PICK

-

Amid the carnage and dislocation of World War I, Stravinsky and the Swiss writer C.F. Ramuz put their heads together to create a sleek little theatrical fable, “L’Histoire du Soldat” (“The Soldier’s Tale”). Written for just a handful of performers, the piece was designed to be flexible and easily adaptable for changing circumstances.

That flexibility turns out to be stylistic as well as logistical. This week, two estimable jazz artists – trumpeter Sean Jones and violinist Regina Carter – open the San Francisco Performances season with a new, jazz-inflected version of “L’Histoire” to celebrate the piece’s centenary. Tenor Nicholas Phan serves as the narrator.

“L’Histoire du Soldat”:

7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28. $45-$55. Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Ave. S.F. 415-392-2545. www.performances.org.
