Shark attack: A shark bit a 13-year-old boy Saturday morning at Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas (San Diego County). The boy, who suffered upper-torso injuries, was later in critical but stable condition after surgery at a San Diego hospital. Witness Chad Hammel said the victim, who was not identified, had been lobster diving. Hammel said he heard screaming and then realized the boy was yelling, “I got bit!” Hammel was also lobster diving with a group, and they pulled the boy onto a kayak and headed to shore. The group applied pressure to the wounds before paramedics transported the victim in a helicopter.

Plane crash: A military jet a short distance from its base crashed in South Carolina with the pilot ejecting safely and no one on the ground injured, authorities said. The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing F-35B crashed Friday into an uninhabited marsh island near the Grays Hill community. The jet was based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort about 4 miles west of the crash site at Little Barnwell Island, the station said. The F-35B fighter jet was on a routine training mission. The Marine version of the jet is capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings. The jet costs about $100 million.

Border deployment: California Gov. Jerry Brown has extended the state National Guard’s participation in President Trump’s border deployment by six months. The California National Guard said in a press release that the mission will now run until the end of March. It had been scheduled to expire Sunday. In April, Brown and Trump clashed fiercely and publicly over whether the Guard would participate and under what terms. Brown insisted that troops have no involvement in immigration enforcement or construction of any border barriers — a condition that the California Guard said will continue during the six-month extension. The California Guard currently has about 400 troops assigned, including some 250 in the San Diego and El Centro areas.

Running for office: Democrat John Kennedy is running for a seat in the state House in Ohio. In more ways than one. The candidate set out from his hometown of Aurora on Friday for a two-day, 142-mile run to the Statehouse in Columbus. Kennedy, a 52-year-old ultramarathoner who has Type 1 diabetes, said he’s using the run — and stops along the way — to bring attention to the rising costs of insulin and other prescription drugs.

Wolf relocation: A gray wolf captured in Minnesota for relocation to Isle Royale National Park has died. The National Park Service plans to move 20 to 30 wolves from the U.S. and Canadian mainlands to the Lake Superior wilderness park in the next few years to rebuild a once thriving population. But the park service said a female died “despite the best efforts of the attending veterinarians” after being trapped and taken to a facility for a medical exam. The park service says its relocation team has adjusted procedures involving how long a captured wolf is held before transport to the island, as well as sedation measures.
