Woods’ magic missing in Ryder Cup in France

-

Tiger Woods kept bending over in anguish, his shoulders sinking farther and farther, the energy ebbing as he made his way around Le Golf National for the second time Saturday.

It was the body language of a tired, defeated golfer.

Quite a contrast to the previous weekend, when he strutted down the final fairway at East Lake in Atlanta, savoring his first victory in more than five years as thousands of fans stormed the course behind him.

Then again, this is the Ryder Cup — one of the few blemishes on Woods’ record. Nothing much has changed in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.

Woods dropped all three of his matches over the first two days — including two Saturday — cut down each time by Europe’s most dynamic combination, Tommy Fleetwood and British Open champion Francesco Molinari.

“The three matches we played, they never missed a putt inside 10 to 12 feet,” Woods said.

Europe leads the competition 10-6 and needs to win only 4½ points from the 12 singles matches Sunday to prevail.

 Phil Mickelson didn’t play

Saturday, reduced to a role of cheerleader. Mickelson lost his only match Friday, dropping his career Ryder Cup record to 18-21-7, the most losses in U.S. history.

PGA Tour Champions: Ken Tanigawa made a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th at Poppy Hills for a 5-under-par 66 and a two-stroke lead over three players in the Pure Insurance Championship.

Making his 18th PGA Tour Champions start after earning his tour card at Q-school, the 50-year-old Tanigawa rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 17th with the eagle.

Romo fails to qualify: Tony Romo shot a 1-over-par 72 in Garland, Texas, to complete a failed bid to advance in the first stage Web.com Tour’s Qualifying Tournament. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback tied for 72nd at 13-under 297 in the 76-player field.
