San Jose State stays winless after going 5 OTs against Hawaii

-

San Jose State worked overtime — five overtimes in all — in pursuit of its first win of the season before coming up short in a 44-41 loss to visiting Hawaii on Saturday night.

The Rainbow Warriors’ Ryan Meskell kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fifth overtime to seal it. He made his last two kicks after missing a pair.

Bryce Crawford attempted to answer for San Jose State, playing at home for the first time since Aug. 30, but missed wide right from 47 yards.

The Rainbow Warriors (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) trailed 31-24 late in regulation, but engineered a 12-play, 75-yard drive with Cole McDonald finding John Ursua for the tying TD. Ursua caught 13 passes for 148 yards and three scores — the first time he had three touchdown receptions in a game.

Hawaii opened the overtime with Dayton Furuta carrying the ball on five of six plays and scoring from the 1. San Jose State (0-4, 0-2) matched the TD, but then Crawford and Meskell each missed two field-goal  No. 3 Clemson rallies to beat Syracuse 27-23

attempts before Crawford hit from 20 for a 41-38 Spartans lead. Meskell made two in a row from 35 for the win.

#1 Alabama 56, Louisiana-Lafayette 14: Jaylen Waddle returned a punt for a TD and caught two scoring passes, including a 94-yarder, and quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts staked the host Crimson Tide (5-0) to a 49-0 halftime lead over the Ragin’ Cajuns (1-3). Then third-teamer Mac Jones got into the act with his 94-yarder to the freshman Waddle late in the third quarter. It tied for the second-longest TD catch in Alabama history. Alabama has scored at least 45 points five games in a row for the first time in program history.

#2 Georgia 38, Tennessee 12: D’Andre Swift ran for two touchdowns, including a late 14-yarder, and the host Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 SEC) used dominant defense to overcome a sluggish offensive start. Freshman quarterback Justin Fields scored on runs of 12 and 15 yards, and Isaac Nauta had a 31-yard fumble return for a score. The Volunteers (2-3, 0-2) were held to 209 yards, but were down just 12 points early in the fourth quarter before Georgia pulled away. Georgia scored touchdowns on its last drive of the first half and opening possession after halftime but otherwise couldn’t maintain momentum. Jake Fromm completed 16 of 22 passes for 185 yards while sharing time with Fields.

#4 Ohio State 27, #9 Penn State 26: Dwayne Haskins threw two touchdown passes in the final seven minutes as the visiting Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) wiped out a 12-point deficit to beat the Nittany Lions. Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley had 461 total yards, including a career-high 175 rushing and threw two touchdown passes, and the Nittany Lions (4-1, 1-1) went up 26-14 with 8:00 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard TD plunge by Miles Sanders.

#5 LSU 45, Mississippi 16: Joe Burrow passed for 292 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 96 yards and another score for the host Tigers (5-0, 2-0) against the Rebels (3-2, 0-2). Burrow had his best game since arriving this year as a graduate transfer from Ohio State, completing 18 of 25 passes to nine receivers. His 388 yards of total offense were fourth-most in a single game in LSU history.

#6 Oklahoma 66, Baylor 33: Kyler Murray sat out the Sooners’ first offensive series — apparently as discipline for a minor infraction — then passed for 432 yards and six touchdowns to the Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) defeat the visiting Bears (3-2, 1-1). Austin Kendall opened the game, but Murray, also an outfielder on the Sooners’ baseball team who was the A’s first-round draft choice this summer, entered on the second possession and played nearly flawless football. Murray also ran for 45 yards and a score for the Sooners. The school would not say why Murray didn’t start. Sports Illustrated reported that he overslept and was late for practice Friday. Head coach Lincoln Riley is known to emphasize that the same rules apply to everyone on the team, even a quarterback who received $5 million from the A’s.

#10 Auburn 24, Southern Mississippi 13: Jarrett Stidham threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns for the host Tigers (4-1). Southern Miss (2-2) had fallen behind 14-3 at the 4:27 mark of the second quarter when the game was delayed nearly three hours by lightning.

#11 Washington 35, #20 BYU 7: Jake Browning completed 23 of 25 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown, and Washington (4-1) was thoroughly dominant on both sides against the visiting Cougars (3-2). The Huskies were on the verge of their first shutout of a ranked opponent since 1990 until a muffed punt led to Lopini Katoa 1-yard TD run with 41 seconds left against Washington’s backups. The Huskies’ last shutout of a ranked team came against USC nearly 30 years ago.

#12 West Virginia 42, #25 Texas Tech 34: Will Grier threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, Keith Washington thwarted a rally with a 51-yard interception return for a score, and Marcus Simms had nine catches for a career-high 138 yards — all in the first half — for his third straight 100yard game for the visiting Mountaineers (4-0, 2-0 Big 12), who scored 28 first-quarter points. The Red Raiders (3-2, 1-1) lost true freshman Alan Bowman, the nation’s leading passer coming in, to injury in the first half on a hit.

#13 Central Florida 45, Pittsburgh 14: McKenzie Milton threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns and the host Knights (4-0) extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games. A week after accounting for six TDs in a lopsided victory over Florida Atlantic, Milton also ran for two scores to give the junior from Hawaii seven TDs passing and five rushing in his past two games. The Panthers dropped to 2-3.

#14 Michigan 20, Northwestern 17: Karan Higdon ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Shea Patterson threw for 196 yards as visiting Michigan (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) overcame a 17-point deficit. Higdon gave the Wolverines the lead with a 5-yard run with 4:06 remaining. Clayton Thorson completed 16 of 27 passes for 174 yards for Northwestern (1-3, 1-1).

#17 Kentucky 24, South Carolina 10: Benny Snell Jr. ran for 99 yards and one of Kentucky’s three consecutive first-half touchdowns and Kentucky(5-0, 3-0 SEC) hung on to beat visiting South Carolina (2-2, 1-2). The Wildcats registered four turnovers, including two interceptions after halftime to preserve their fifth straight series win over the Gamecocks.

#18 Texas 19, Kansas State 14: Sam Ehlinger threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, D’Shawn Jamison returned a punt 90 yards for a score and the Longhorns (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) snapped a five-game road losing streak to the Wildcats (2-3, 0-2). Keaontay Ingram churned for a first down with less than three minutes to go, allowing Texas to run out the clock after blowing much of a 19-0 halftime lead.

#21 Michigan State 31, Central Michigan 20: Brian Lewerke ran for two touchdowns in the first half, and the host Spartans (3-1) overcame a slow start and an underwhelming finish. Michigan State entered with the nation’s top-ranked run defense and held the Chippewas (1-4) to 5 yards on the ground in the first half.

Virginia Tech 31, #22 Duke 14: Ryan Willis threw for 332 yards and a career-best three touchdowns in his first start for Virginia Tech as the Hokies (2-2, 2-0 ACC) bounced back from last week’s 14-point loss at Old Dominion and dealt the host Blue Devils (4-1, 0-1) their first loss.

Florida 13, #23 Mississippi State 6: Feleipe Franks threw for 219 yards and visiting Florida’s defense dominated. Coach Dan Mullen won in his return to Starkville, guiding Florida (4-1, 2-1) to success in his first appearance at Davis Wade Stadium since leaving Mississippi State (3-2, 0-2) in November after nine seasons.

Washington State 28, Utah 24: Gardner Minshew threw an 89-yard touchdown pass to Easop Winston Jr. late in the fourth quarter to lift Washington State (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12). The Cougars shredded the nation’s No. 1 defense for 454 total yards and won their 10th straight home game. Utah (2-2, 0-2) came in allowing just 12.3 points and 204 yards per game. Arizona State 52, Oregon State 24: Eno Benjamin rushed for 312 yards on 30 carries and scored four touchdowns as the host Sun Devils (3-2, 1-1) beat the Beavers (1-4, 0-2), giving coach Herm Edwards his first Pac-12 victory. Benjamin, a sophomore from Wylie, Texas, scored on runs of 44, 47 and 10 yards and caught an 8-yard touchdown pass. Benjamin broke the school’s singlegame record of 250 yards rushing set by Ben Malone against Oregon State in 1973. Saturday’s performance was No. 8 on the Pac-12 list.

Player collapses: Tennessee State’s Christion Abercrombie collapsed on the sideline in a game against Vanderbilt and had emergency surgery for a head injury after being rushed to the hospital. University officials said Abercrombie was in critical condition and being observed. Head coach Rod Reed headed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to check on the linebacker after the game. Reed said he was not sure how or when linebacker was hurt.
