Richard Ryan passed away on Sept 22nd after a brief battle with cancer. Born in San Mateo on May 16, 1930, his roots in the city ran deep. A graduate of St. Matthew’s School and San Mateo High School (class of ‘48) as well as the College of San Mateo, he went on to serve in the San Mateo Police Department for 30 years.

Richard’s grandfathe­r, Dr. Edwin Kehoe was born in Cincinnati and practiced for many years at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee before transferri­ng to Fort Miley in San Francisco in 1928. His grandmothe­r was a native of Escanaba, Michigan. His parents George and Mary (Kehoe) met at Marquette University and arrived in San Francisco in 1930 with 2 young children in tow. Richard was the first to be born in California. His uncle James Kehoe was the Postmaster of San Mateo for many years.

In 1947, Richard joined the naval reserves, Treasure Island and volunteere­d for active duty in 1951, assigned to the 7th Fleet aboard the battleship USS Iowa. He was a proud member of the Korean Vets Associatio­n.

Survived by his wife Barbara; daughters: Kathy Ryan of Foster City & Sheila Sundberg of Seattle; sister Patricia Duyanovich (Sacramento); brothers: Mike (Petaluma), George (Seattle) & Dennis (San Jose); grandchild­ren: Sean, Daniel, Ryan & Maya; and his beloved feline pals Seamus & Molly. Preceded in death by brothers Jim & Don. A special thanks to the staff at Snowline Hospice, especially Mary Lou, Megan, Charlene and Cindy.

Private services were held. Interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma. Gifts in Richard’s memory can be made to the Peninsula Humane Society.
