Oct 9, 1948 - Sept 9, 2018

Stephen G. Schrey, 69, passed away while bicycling through the beautiful Redwoods of Humboldt County, one of his favorite places in the world. A current resident of Mill Valley, formerly a resident of Lafayette, he was the eldest of five sons born in Monrovia, California to Harry and Cleone Schrey. Steve attended the San Fernando Seminary and graduated from the University of Santa Clara (1970, B.A. History) and from the University of San Francisco (USF) Law School in 1974.

He initially worked for the law office of Charles P. Scully in San Francisco. He then joined Crosby, Heafey, Roach and May, ascending to partner within a few years and went on to work at Lillick Charles and Nixon Peabody. In 2012, he left Big Law and went into business for himself, continuing his career as an attorney mediating cases in California and around the country.

Some of Steve’s greatest joys in life were being surrounded by family, seeing his children grow into adults, hearing his grandchildren laugh, hiking across the West, telling different versions of the same ghost story over and over again, working in his garden, reading lengthy books on people of importance, wine, music and having a spirited debate. Steve’s love of history was never more on display as when he talked about the Civil War.

His diligence, work ethic, and intellect set an example for all and his loss will be felt by many.

Steve is survived by his partner, Janet; first wife and mother to his children Mary; second wife Michelle, brothers Tom, Mark and John; his children Matthew (Erica), Peter (Liz) and Elizabeth; and grandchildren Cassidy, Hannah and John. He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Cleone and brother Rick.

A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (3 Oakdale Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941) on Saturday, October 6th, at 11:00 am, followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to the Sierra Club: San Francisco Chapter, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (de Young/Legion of Honor), or The American Bar Association Scholarships and Financial Aid.
