Spotlight on: WR Pierre Garcon. When an accomplished 32-yearold wideout gets off to a slow start, it’s either a slow start … or a sign of something more ominous. After three games, it’s premature to say Father Time has tracked down Garcon, but he’s managed just seven catches for 89 yards after missing the final eight games of 2017 with a neck injury. Without QB Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers will need Garcon and Marquise Goodwin (three catches, 30 yards), who missed most of two games with a deep thigh bruise, to emerge to assist QB C.J. Beathard. Garcon and Goodwin are the only 49ers wide receivers with more than 50 career catches.

Injuries: 49ers — CB Richard Sherman (calf) is out; S Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) is doubtful; RB Matt Breida (knee), S Adrian Colbert (hip) and DB Antone Exum (quadriceps) are questionable. Chargers — DE Joey Bosa is out; WR Keenan Allen (knee, tooth) is questionable.

THINGS TO WATCH FOR

 Chargers QB Philip Rivers (eight TDs, one INT) ranks sixth in the NFL in passer rating (115.7) and seventh in passing yards per game (302).
