5goal third period fuels Flyers’ victory

-

Trailing by two goals early in the third period, the Philadelphia Flyers didn’t get discouraged. They simply maintained their focus and came through with their biggest late rally in nearly six years.

Kevin Hayes scored the goahead shorthanded goal late in host Philadelphia’s fivegoal third period, and the Flyers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 74 Saturday night.

“When you have five goals in nine minutes, it’s just an example of sticking to it,” Hayes said. “We’re getting a lot of shots on net each night and that’s been big for us.” James van Riemsdyk had two goals and an assist, Jake Voracek added a goal and two assists, Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal and an assist, and Michael Raffl and Travis Konecny also scored for Philadelphia. Ivan Provorov and Hayes also each had two assists, and Brian Elliott finished with 22 saves for the Flyers.

The fivegoal outburst was the first time that Philadelphia had that many tallies in the third period since Dec. 19, 2013, when they rallied to beat Columbus 54.

“I thought we deserved to win this game,” Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said. “We were the better team. We had a real strong second period, tied it up, saw them score one (at the end of the second) and one (early in the third) to take the lead. But we said that we were going to find a way to win this game.”

Boone Jenner scored twice, and PierreLuc Dubois and Josh Anderson also had goals for Columbus. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 39 shots.

Anderson’s goal 2:15 into the third period gave the Blue Jackets a 42 lead. The Flyers then scored five times in an 8:54 stretch in the latter half of the period.

“After that goal we got to have a push and stay on it,” Jenner said. “I don’t think we did that tonight.”

Gostisbehere got the rally started with a slap shot with 9:08 left, and van Riemsdyk tipped in his second of the night to tie it with 7:23 to go. Jets 2, Flames 1: Bryan Little scored a shorthanded goal at 3:04 of overtime as Winnipeg beat Calgary in the Heritage Classic in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Flames held a 1-0 lead thanks to Elias Lindholm’s secondperiod goal until the Jets’ Josh Morrissey scored at 15:49 of the third.

Ducks 5, Avalanche 2: Adam Henrique scored in the first minute and Anaheim led wire to wire in Denver.

Predators 3, Lightning 2: Ryan Ellis scored 3:15 into overtime to lift visiting Nashville. Ellis scored from the left circle shortly after the Predators failed to score on a power play that resulted from the Lightning having too many men on the ice. Nashville played without forwards Matt Duchene and Filip Forsberg, who were out with lower body injuries.

Wild 5, Kings 1: Eric Staal scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and Alex Stalock stopped 30 shots to lead host Minnesota, which won for the third time in four games after losing six of the first seven.

Bruins 3, Blues 0: David Pastrnak scored his team-leading 11th goal, Tuukka Rask stopped 26 shots for his second shutout this season and host Boston won a rematch of the Stanley

Cup Finals. It was the first meeting between the teams since St. Louis won its first Cup last season.

Hurricanes 4, Blackhawks 0: Petr Mrazek stopped 32 shots for his second shutout in 12 days and Andrei Svechnikov scored twice as host Carolina handed Chicago its fourth straight loss.

Penguins 3, Stars 0: Matt Murray made 25 saves for his first shutout of the season, Dominik Kahun and Bryan Rust scored in the third period, and visiting Pittsburgh beat Dallas.

Canadiens 5, Maple Leafs 2: Jonathan Drouin scored two goals on breakaways, and host Montreal beat Toronto. The Canadiens broke a 2-2 tie with three goals in the third period.
