Falcons’ Ryan to sit for first time in decade

-

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan won’t play Sunday against Seattle, ending his 10year starting streak.

Ryan sprained his right ankle last week in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He had limited participation in Friday’s practice and was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.

The team announced Saturday that veteran Matt Schaub will start and Ryan won’t play against the Seahawks.

The Falcons (16) have a bye week after Sunday’s game, giving Ryan’s ankle more time to heal.

Schaub will make his first start since 2015 with Baltimore and his first start with Atlanta since 2005.

The Falcons promoted Danny Etling from the practice squad to back up Schaub.

Ryan, the 2016 MVP, has not missed a game since 2009. He has made 154 consecutive regularseason and nine postseason starts.

Drew Brees reportedly will start at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, beginning his comeback from thumb surgery that sidelined him for five games.

Brees practiced this week and was listed as questionable on the Saints’ final injury report of the week on Friday. ESPN first reported Brees’ updated status for Sunday.

Teddy Bridgewater has started the past five games, all victories.

Russell Okung has been moved up to the Los Angeles Chargers’ active roster. The tackle is expected to see his first action of the season Sunday against Chicago. Okung had been on the nonfootball injury list since he suffered a pulmonary embolism June 1.
