Where to get scared in Bay Area for Halloween

-

last year, guests get to experience two distinct horror shows — both are new this year.

In “Night Terrors” you’ll explore (and try to survive) the infamous “Hale house,” a place that knows your fears and uses them against you. And in “Tooth Collector,” you’ll meet the survivors of Dr. Pearly, a dentist who seemed to relish in tooth decay. Turns out you have something they want.

Select dates during the hours of 710 p.m., with some late nights running until midnight. Through Nov. 2. $25.99. $30.99 on Saturdays and Oct. 31. Bay Fair Mall, 15555 E. 14th St., San Leandro. www.fearoverload.com

Fright Fest at Six Flags Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is back with its annual Halloween nightmare. The amusement park haunts up its rides, stages scary shows (a la Creepshow Freakshow) and sets up scare zones throughout — so watch out for the moving scarecrows.

New this year is a scare zone called “Toxic Terror” (“years of illegal dumping” hasn’t been kind to the residents) and the much more pleasantsounding “Drake Market,” featuring “undyingly unique food, macabre merchandise and ghoulish games.”

410 p.m. Fridays, noon10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 6. Also open 11 a.m6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, and 410 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Tickets start at $36.49. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, 1001 Fairgrounds Drive, Vallejo. www.six flags.com/discoverykingdom

Halloween Haunt at Great America If you didn’t get a chance to schedule an appointment with Great America’s very creepy tooth fairy last year, well, you’re in luck because she’s taking new victims … er, patients. Halloween Haunt offers the usual amusement park rides, haunted mazes and scare zones. Plus, there are a few brandnew attractions this year: Wax Museum Blackout, Killer Clown Town and some sort of homage to Día de los Muertos, the Mexican spiritual holiday that honors the dead.

7 p.m.midnight (with select closures at 1 a.m.) FridaysSundays. Through Nov. 6. And 611 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Tickets start at $35 online. California’s Great America, 4701 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara. www.cagreatamerica.com

Pirates of Emerson If scary pirates get your blood pumping, look no further than Pirates of Emerson. Pirates has been going for 28 years now, so the entertainers have a pretty good idea of how to make attendees jump and scream. Take your time exploring five haunted attractions, among them “Hillbilly Holler,” “Maze Haze” and “Dorm of Doom.”
