Top quarterback hurt; unbeaten Serra romps

- By Mitch Stephens

The muchanticipated West Catholic Athletic League battle next week sustained a major blow Saturday when Serra quarterback Daylin McLemore went down with a seasonending injury.

McLemore’s collarbone was broken on his left side in No. 3 Serra’s 357 home win over Sacred Heart Cathedral, Padres coach Patrick Walsh confirmed.

Up 70, McLemore’s injury occured early in the first quarter on a 40yard run. He was tackled cleanly in the open field.

“A football play and a football injury,” Walsh said.

McLemore’s replacement, sophomore Dominique Lampkin, rushed for firsthalf touchdowns of 45 and 25 yards and completed a 47yard TD pass to Nate Sanchez.

Hassan Mahasin (30 yards) and Vince Poni (18) added rushing touchdowns for the Padres (80, 50), who had a 350 halftime lead and next host secondranked Valley Christian (80, 50) at 2 p.m. Saturday. Lampkin, a dual threat and an especially good runner, likely will be coached a lot this week by McLemore, the team leader.

“Kids were all in tears at halftime for Daylin,” Walsh said. “It shows what an amazing person he is. It was a hard moment, but a beautiful one. … It will take a communal effort now to beat Valley.”
