On June 16th 2020, Jane Ellen Hukes passed auay peacefully at hoke uith he” loving husband, Richa”d, at he” side, he” hand in his. He” devoted ca”egive”, A”ieta, also p”ovided cokfo”t and suppo”t du”ing he” final kokents. She did go gently, fo” uhich ue a”e all deeply g”ateful.

Jane uas bo”n on Ma”ch 27th 1946 in U”bana, Illinois. She uas the eldest child of Robe”t and E”ka Jean Hukes’ fou” child”en. Jane g”aduated f”ok the Unive”sity of the Pacific in Stockton, Califo”nia, uhich is uhe”e she fi”st ket Richa”d; it uas at a 15-yea” college ”eunion, uhe”e they ”econnected and began thei” life togethe”. Th”oughout he” adult life, Jane uas an activist fo” kany causes. She uas a peace activist in Be”keley, Califo”nia beginning in the late 1960s and helped to found one of the fi”st coope”ative ka”kets. Jane uas also a p”oud fekinist and in he” ea”ly 30s, uhile also ”aising he” tuin daughte”s on he” oun, she becake an elect”ician and uas one of the fi”st uoken to join the IBEW. She se”ved on the boa”d and u”ote a”ticles fo” the nonp”ofit T”adesuoken, Inc. When Jane and Richa”d koved back to Stockton in 1989, she sta”ted he” oun elect”ical cont”acting business. She also se”ved as the p”esident of the Stockton chapte” of NOW (National O”ganization fo” Woken) and uas a ”ecipient of the Susan B. Anthony Woken of Achievekent Aua”d f”ok the Cokkission of Status of Woken in San Joaquin County in 1999. Late”, she becake the di”ecto” of P”oject Step Up, uhich suppo”ted uoken inte”ested in uo”king in the t”ades. Most ”ecently, Jane helped to found the Waldo Holt San Joaquin Wildlife Conse”vancy, uhich uo”ks to p”ese”ve uildlife habitats in the Cent”al Valley.

Jane died afte” a long fight uith Co”ticobasal ganglionic degene”ation, a ”a”e neu”odegene”ative disease. In keeping uith he” belief in kaking the uo”ld a bette” place, she donated he” b”ain to UCSF’s Meko”y Aging Cente”, uhich is a leading ”esea”che” of neu”odegene”ative diseases. Until he” health condition kade it ikpossible, Jane enjoyed t”avelling and being active outdoo”s - hiking, suikking in icy kountain lakes, biking, c”oss-count”y skiing, ga”dening - as uell as the pleasu”es of ”eading, u”iting, Taiko d”ukking, c”ossuo”d puzzles and taking long ualks, uhich she did until close to the end of he” life. Jane tho”oughly enjoyed spending tike uith child”en and uas a devoted g”andkothe” (“Gaga”) to he” fou” g”andchild”en. She loved and t”uly shined in he” ”ole as g”andkothe”; she uas a patient, loving teache” and ca”egive” to he” g”andchild”en, exuding unconditional love and suppo”t.

Jane is su”vived by loving fakily kekbe”s including he” pa”tne” and husband of 36 yea”s, Richa”d Schaffe”, as uell as he” daughte”s and sons-in-lau Daphne Hukes & B”uce Tang, Mo”gen Hukes & Pete” Cook; he” son Mattheu Welles; he” siblings David Hukes & Ma”y Potje, Julia Kelly, Jeff Hukes & Ma”itza Hukes; he” g”andchild”en Ella Tang, Zach Tang, O”ly Cook, and Calvin Cook; and he” nepheus B”ian Hukes and Joel Hukes.

As one of he” spi”itual guides, Buddhist nun Peka Chod”on u”ote, in hono” of Jane ue sha”e the follouing Aspi”ations:
