An ocean of plastic

Regarding “Plastic pollution falling from sky, study shows” (Front Page, June 24): Plastic pollution is one of the biggest ongoing problems for the environment. Not just single use water bottles, bags or other plastic waste but fleece products and microfiber cleaning cloths are sources of pollution. Washing these sends fibers into the water supply and have been identified in fish. Control of plastics is difficult but necessary.

Move statues to Alcatraz

While considering what to do with our newly (and appropriately) removed or toppled statues (Christopher Columbus, Ulysses Grant, Junipero Serra, Francis Scott Key and “Early Days”), I think a museum display on the island of Alcatraz would be an excellent option.

Given the island’s occupation by indigenous activists in the 1970s, and that many of the statues were removed because of these individuals’ treatment of that community, it seems appropriate. (Not to mention the poetic aspect of relegating these perpetrators of racial crime to a former penal institution.)

Advice for Biden

Regarding “Biden must still close the deal with voters” (Bay Area, June 21): Joe Biden’s campaign had best heed Willie Brown’s prescient take: People need a reason to vote for him, even though they have ample reason to reject President Trump.

Brown’s citation of former President Bill Clinton’s success, along with his advice that Biden focus on taking back the Senate to control judicial appointments, should prompt Biden’s campaign to coopt Clinton’s unofficial campaign slogan. However inelegant, “It’s the economy, stupid” proved to be a winner. Biden might well prevail with “It’s the judges, stupid!”

President’s out of touch

Concerning “Trump’s hubris, unmasked” (Editorial, June 20): Regardless of whether a sea of President Trump supporters chose to wear face masks during a weekend political rally in Tulsa, Okla., his national appeal remains largely limited to white Evangelical Christians.

As an African American, I’m less upset with Trump taking credit for making more citizens aware of Juneteenth and more angered by his claim that MAGA loves Black people. This selfprofessed law and order president, who recently held up a Bible as a prop in front of a church for a craven photo op, is clearly out of touch with the current state of race relations in this country.

If he’s defeated in November, Trump should (while fighting multiple lawsuits) appear in the remake of a TV show that shares its title with the place in which he’s long been living: “Fantasy Island.”

Ban sale of fireworks

As if Bay Area residents don’t have enough to worry about with an increase in coronavirus cases and a faltering economy, now comes “Complaints rocket with the fireworks” (Bay Area, June 25)?

Our region is very dry, and all it takes is one wayward firework to cause acres of land to erupt in a blaze. Please, Bay Area county supervisors, ban the sale of these potential inferno igniters!
