Quakes draw in reopening

It wasn’t a win, but Earthquake­s coach Matias Almeyda was pleased with his team’s first performanc­e at the MLS is Back tournament on Friday night in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

San Jose and the Seattle Sounders seemed to wilt in the heat and humidity as they combined for 28 total shots but could not beat either goalkeeper in a 00 draw.

“You saw a team with soul,” Almeyda said. “I’m really happy with the game my team played.”

Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei made eight saves, including a diving stop on a deflected shot in the 70th minute. But San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vega

was his equal. Vega had six saves, stopping Cristian Roldan on a clear chance in the first half. Vega then denied Raul Ruidiaz inside the penalty area in the 84th minute.

“Ever since I came to this team Matias really put that in us that we had to do our best,” Vega said through an interprete­r. Florian Valot scored in the opening minutes, and the New York Red Bulls beat Atlanta United 10 Saturday in the MLS is Back tournament. In the Premier League, Raheem Sterling scored a hat trick as Manchester City routed host Brighton 50 to secure second place; Chelsea’s bid for Champions League qualificat­ion hit a bump in losing at Sheffield United 30; and Michail Antonio scored all the goals as West Ham won 40 to relegate host Norwich.
