PROJECTED LINEUP AND BATTING ORDER

-

Mike Yastrzemski, RF: An everyday player and good defender who was being groomed as a center fielder back in March. Bats lefty and has reverse splits: .256/.321/ .505 against righties and .329/ .382/.561 against lefties. Mauricio Dubón, CF: He’s Mr. Everything, the man of many gloves, and he’ll play around the diamond. Doesn’t lack talent or confidence, and is fun to watch. Impressive at the end of last season.

Evan Longoria, 3B: Longoria, 34, the only core player signed through 2022, will need to assume more of the leadership role without Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner. For now, he has an oblique strain.

Darin Ruf, DH: The surprise of the first spring training, Ruf provides needed pop from the right side. Giants hope he resembles the player who homered 86 times the past three years in South Korea.

Brandon Belt, 1B: Fans are eager to see how Belt’s power plays with the new Oracle Park dimensions. Heel issue detoured him in Spring Training 2.0, which is doubly harmful in shortened camp. Hunter Pence, LF: Pence, 37, will play against lefties, and Alex Dickerson is a good bet to play the position against righties. Platooning could keep Pence productive. Brandon Crawford, SS: His first season without Bruce Bochy managing, Crawford said he’s allin on the methods of the new coaching staff, particularly the three hitting coaches.

Wilmer Flores, 2B: If Flores hits as he did with the Diamondbacks (.317/.361/.487 in 89 games), he’ll play regularly, including at first base against lefties.

Tyler Heineman, C: In these Busterless times, daily tryouts are in order. Rob Brantly and Chadwick Tromp are in the conversation, all three with skimpy experience (if any) in the majors. Joey Bart? The sooner, the better.

Rotation

Johnny Cueto, RH: It was clear when Cueto arrived at Oracle Park that he had been throwing a lot. The Opening Night starter has good arm strength, which is dandy news following his August 2018 Tommy John surgery. Jeff Samardzija, RH: Samardzija said he wants to be able to throw 7580 pitches right away, but management insists all starters will be eased in slowly, no more than three, maybe four, innings apiece. We’ll see how Samardzija responds.

Kevin Gausman, RH:

Signed a oneyear, $9 million deal in December. Helped Braves make playoffs down stretch in 2018. Scuffled last season until Reds demoted him to bullpen, where he got his groove back and posted a 3.10 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 201⁄3 innings.

Drew Smyly, LH: Signed a oneyear, $4 million deal in January. Pitched for Rangers and Phillies last season after coming off Tommy John surgery, his time in Philly under Gabe Kapler. He missed both the 2017 and 2018 seasons while rehabbing.

Tyler Anderson, LH: Who knows what the Giants will do with the fifth spot? Perhaps they’re not totally sure yet. It might be someone other than Anderson, a former Rockie. It might be an opener. It might be Pablo Sandoval. Not really.

?? Scott Strazzante / The Chronicle ?? Mauricio Dubón is currently the center fielder, but his defensive ability allows the Giants to play him anywhere.
