Art’s Cafe

Thank you, Art’s Cafe, for making us feel like family. The Korean American neighborhood diner run by Sarah and Hae Ryong Youn — often with help from their daughter — was an incredible highwire act, with the

Youns serving hash brown sandwiches, Korean barbecue and standard diner food in a long thin space perfect for making new friends. (Even though the tight quarters are unimaginable in a pandemic.) After the restaurant closed in March, the Youns reportedly retired. Hae Ryong on the grill and Sarah serving diners was an energetic and impressive ballet, and the postcards along the counter sent by customers from all over the world were proof that this 30yearold diner was about a larger community.
