Uptown Nightclub

-

1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland

Thank you, Uptown Nightclub, for 15 years of musical exploration, comfortable surroundings and a reflection of the neighborhood as it grew around you. When the Telegraph Avenue club opened in 2005, The Chronicle described it as “stark” and surrounded by “empty storefronts and deserted sidewalks.” The neighborhood quickly became one of the hottest in the Bay Area, and Uptown changed ownership but remained true to its musicloving, joyful clientele. Green Day played secret shows there, and local legends including High on Fire, Deafheaven and The Avengers performed multiple times. Regular events including Uptown Karaoke, Hella Gay Dance Party and Hiero Nights filled up the schedule. Current owners Robbin GreenYeh and Ray Yeh announced on Sept. 5 that Uptown will not reopen. “We strived to represent and welcome the diversity of the Bay Area,” they wrote. “In that we succeeded and we will be forever proud of this accomplishment. Thank you all for being a part of our lives.”
