San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
Farallon
READER NOMINATION
450 Post St., San Francisco
Thank you, Farallon seafood restaurant, for exemplifying the kind of presentationheavy destinationrestaurant experience that dominated in the 1990s and early 2000s. Planted in Union Square in 1997 by bold designer Pat Kuleto, Farallon was a regular on The Chronicle’s Top 100, when that list was filled with expensive San Francisco restaurants that diners visited as if completing a checklist. The jellyfish chandeliers were as memorable as the steady food, serving tourists and fine dining crowds for 23 years. Restaurant partner Pete Sittnick told The Chronicle’s Janelle Bitker after its official August closure that Farallon was about the dining experience, which couldn’t be replicated via takeout, and that “the dynamics and luster of Union Square have certainly declined” as well.
