RB Jerick McKinnon: Head coach Kyle Shanahan had big plans for McKinnon in 2018 when the 49ers signed him to a four-year, $30 million contract. Now, after spending two seasons sidelined by a knee injury, McKinnon is ready to make his long-awaited 49ers debut. It’s likely the 49ers will use him creatively this season in a third-down role, but his job duties could expand, perhaps as soon as Sunday. Raheem Mostert will have the lead-back role, but his primary backup, Tevin Coleman, who has the sickle cell trait, could be limited or sidelined because of poor air quality.

Injury notes:

49ers — WR Deebo Samuel (foot) and CB Jason Verrett (hamstring) are out; WR Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) and C Ben Garland (ankle) are questionable. Cardinals — OT Josh Jones (ankle) is out.

The 49ers averaged 67.5 rushing yards, 2.7 yards per carry and had zero rushing touchdowns in their two meetings against Arizona last season. They averaged 155 rushing yards, 4.8 yards per carry and had 23 rushing touchdowns in their other 14 regular-season games.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo averaged 370.5 passing yards and threw eight touchdown passes and two interceptions while posting a 125.1 passer rating in two games against Arizona last season. Garoppolo averaged 231.2 passing yards and threw 19 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions while posting a 97.2 passer rating in his 14 other regular-season games.

Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald, 37, has 182 receptions, 2,381 yards and 19 touchdowns in 32 career games against the 49ers. No player in the NFL has more 100-yard receiving performances (11) against a single opponent than Fitzgerald has against the 49ers. The 49ers’ Jerry Rice had 11 100-yard games against the Falcons.
