Anderson in for Cueto

Tyler Anderson knows he put the Giants in a tough spot with his temper — not just Thursday, when he was ejected, but for the days that followed. He now has a chance to turn his verbal apology into a desperately needed atonement on the mound.

Anderson will start Sunday, when the Giants try to avoid a series and season sweep at the hands of the A’s and fall deeper out of the postseason picture. Anderson will replace Johnny Cueto.

Cueto has had a hip issue, and the staff feels he could benefit from another day off tacked onto the six he had since he allowed six runs in last Sunday’s 60 loss in San Diego.

“We’ve just been pushing him back because we want him to feel fully recovered and ready to explode,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s got a lot of variations in his delivery. We want him to feel as confident as possible. That’s all this is about. This is not a strategy play.”

Anderson threw 49 pitches Thursday before homeplate umpire Edwin Moscoso ejected him with nobody out in the third inning after Anderson argued balls and strikes. Anderson and Kapler both said after the game that the lefty can’t allow that to happen, given the stakes.

It forced Kapler to use seven innings worth of bullpen, which responded by not allowing a run and helping the Giants beat the Mariners 64. But the ejection also forced the Giants to option Wandy Peralta after he followed Anderson with three innings and 49 pitches.

The Giants recalled Peralta on Saturday to replace Alex Dickerson, who went on paternity leave. Barring that, or an injury, Peralta would not have been eligible to return during the regular season.

Kapler does not believe Cueto’s hip injury and his bad start against the Padres were related.

“I actually thought he looked pretty good physically in that outing,” Kapler said. “I don’t think he really had his best command in San Diego.”

Dickerson’s leave: Dickerson’s expected departure for the birth of his and wife Jennifer’s first child, a son, could be brief. Paternity leaves last a maximum of three days.

“My inclination is it won’t be too long, based on discussions I had with Alex,” Kapler said.

While the Giants technically replaced Dickerson with Peralta, they also summoned infielder Daniel Robertson, who started at shortstop Saturday and went 1for3. Robertson would have been the fourth outfielder had the Giants needed one. Their three healthy outfielders — Darin Ruf, Mauricio Dubon and Luis Basabe — all started.

Robertson has played just 31 majorleague innings in the outfield, none since 2018, but he has been taking flyballs. Lefthander Andrew Suarez, who was promoted for bullpen coverage after Anderson’s ejection, was optioned back to the alternate camp in Sacramento.
