Oldest S. F. restaurant reopening

- By Janelle Bitker

San Franciscans were devastated when Tadich Grill closed its doors in July, unsure whether the city’s oldest restaurant would ever reopen. Thanks to the return of indoor dining, Tadich Grill’s classic cioppino, steaks and oysters will be back Nov. 9.

The reopening will also mark the first time the Financial District restaurant will take reservations in its 171 years in business. Moving forward, Tadich Grill is encouraging diners to secure their tables on Tock.

Takeout and delivery will resume, but the restaurant is banking on people being excited for indoor dining. After all, the oldschool vibe of Tadich

Grill — with its gleaming wood wainscotting, crisp white tablecloths and jacketed servers — is a major draw on its own.

That said, safety protocols will probably make the experience feel a little different. Tables are being moved at least 6 feet apart. Employees will wear face shields. The flow of the restaurant will ensure people walk in only one direction.

Yvette Buich, wife of owner Michael Buich, said the family is excited to welcome diners again.

The Buiches initially closed Tadich Grill when San Francisco’s timeline for indoor dining was delayed indefinitely in July. Before that, the restaurant struggled to attract takeout orders, and the Buiches didn’t feel like outdoor dining would work at Tadich’s downtown location. When San Francisco allowed indoor dining at 25% capacity, the Buiches said the numbers wouldn’t pencil out for reopening. The city’s move to 50% next month, however, means its most historic restaurant is ready to open its doors.
